If you hit the afternoon slump around 2-4 PM, you are not alone. This energy dip occurs due to a natural shift in your circadian rhythm, as well as fluctuations in blood sugar levels after lunch.
Here’s why it happens and how you can fuel your body to stay energised:
- Blood sugars decline – After lunch, especially if it was high in refined carbs or low in protein, your blood sugar can spike and then crash, leading to fatigue and cravings.
- Cortisol and melatonin shift – Your body’s internal clock naturally signals a slight decrease in cortisol (your alertness hormone) and a rise in melatonin (your sleep hormone), making you feel sluggish
- Dehydration – Even mild dehydration can cause tiredness, headaches, and brain fog.
To stabilise energy levels, opt for a balanced snack rich in protein, healthy fats, and fibre to keep blood sugar steady and fuel your brain. Some great options include:
- Nut butter with apple slices – A perfect mix of fibre, protein, and natural sugars for slow-releasing energy.
- Dark chocolate & almonds – A combo of magnesium, healthy fats, and a natural stimulatory boost.
- Greek yogurt with berries & chia seeds – Packed with protein and omega-3s for brain power.
- Matcha latte with coconut milk – A steady caffeine lift without the crash
AND of course, (we know you’re here for the recipe after all!) our delicious CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER OAT BARS.
Next time that slump hits, reach for a nourishing snack instead of high caffeine, high sugar quick fixes—I’m confident you’ll feel the difference!
CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER OAT BARS
Serves 12
Dairy Free (opt) : Plant based
1/2 cup medjool dates, pitted
1/4 cup rolled oats
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup peanut butter
1 tbsp chia seeds
1/4 cup hemp seeds
1/3 cup dark chocolate chips or chunks (use plant based chocolate for dairy free / vegan option)
Add dates, oats, vanilla, peanut butter, chia and hemp seeds to a food processor and blitz to a crumb, then add 2 tbsp water and blitz to a dough. Transfer the dough from the food processor to a bowl and add the chocolate chips or chunks. Use a fork (or your clean hands) to press the chocolate chunks evenly through the dough. Line a small loaf tin or tupper ware container with greaseproof paper (around 8x12cm size), press dough into the container and flatten the top. Place in freezer to set for 2-3 hours, then slice into 12 pieces. Eat some, stash some in the freezer for up to 2 months or keep in the fridge up to 2 weeks (if they last!)
